Until the outbreak of World War I, there were no gallantry awards other than the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Service Cross. Shortly after the commencement of the First World War, the Military Cross was instituted. It was originally awarded to captains, lieutenants and warrant officers of the Army but was then extended to include those same ranks within the Royal Air Force , the Royal Navy Division and the Royal Marines.
Bars for second and subsequent awards have a crown at the centre. These are available to purchase at $16.00 each
